Why you need to see “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

Why you need to see “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

By Paige Weber

This Wednesday, Nov. 19th, the Dew Drop Drama Company, St. Kate’s very own theatre club, will be putting on the Shakespearean play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This dramedy is full of love, longing, and vengeance. It follows the messy love lives of 4 protagonists and the fairies who concern themselves with it. Add in a sword fight or two, and we have a comedic masterpiece that has stood the test of centuries.

The first edition of this article serves as a guide for you, the audience. I spoke with the student leaders behind the production to get their insight on its making, their artistic choices and what they’re excited for you to see. Then, a few days after the performance, we’ll be coming back here with an updated review.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous comedies. The story takes place in the forests outside of Athens, Greece, and follows 3 pairs of lovers who face the meddling forces of the king of fairies and the vagaries of love. Audiences can expect character dynamics that are as complicated as they are entertaining.

Allie Hagel ‘27 (Fashion Design, Business & Sustainability minors) said that the major themes of the show are “love, revenge, and finding ways to work together by meeting each other in the middle.”

The play has been expertly adapted by the student board of the Dew Drop Drama Company to fit the length and needs of the St. Kate’s community. In order to trim the traditional play from 2 hours down to 1, they have tailored the script to fit the students and the stories of the characters they are playing. “What’s so fun about Shakespeare is that you can meld it to be your own thing while still keeping the main points in,” said Hagel.

“It’s a good time to see that we do have a drama club on campus!” said Hagel. “We have a lot of students who are trying out new things on campus.” Take the opportunity to support the drama company through this fabulously comedic, petty-drama-filled show.

The show is free to attend, and snacks will be provided.

There’s more whimsy to come this Spring. Follow the team on Instagram @dewdropdramaco for the announcement of their next production, casting calls, and tech opportunities.
