Introduction to Civic Engagement

Introduction to Civic Engagement

By Olivia Stevermer

Civic engagement is one of the most important aspects of social justice. By definition it is a non-partisan endeavor that encompasses any number of actions taken by a group of people for the betterment and wellbeing of the community. Knowing where to engage with government systems and when or how to use the power of your vote or voice is crucial to being part of your community. Civic engagement is also a crucial part of the St. Kate’s community. There are a number of ways each semester to engage civically on campus and even more resources for community work and further opportunities off campus. T

he student organization for civic engagement on campus is the St.Kate’s Civic Engagement Fellowship (or SCEF). This is a nonpartisan group of students with faculty support that aims to build a civically engaged campus by bringing students together through education, dialogue, and action. We would love to extend the offer to any and all students at St. Kate’s to join SCEF and/or participate in our events this year!

Fellows will grow as leaders, promote civic engagement and social justice, and help create spaces where all voices are heard. They’ll receive support in leading events and initiatives that inspire community involvement. Contact eganderson600@stkate.edu to learn more.

The purpose of this SCEF column is to discuss what civic engagement looks like and keep the campus community updated and aware of opportunities to participate.
