We are Nature’s Guests: Studying Abroad in Costa Rica

By Alexandriana Davis

Over spring break, I had the opportunity to visit Monteverde, Costa Rica, for the first time. Led by Dr. Rahul Roy, Associate Professor of Biology, and Dr. Neela Nandyal, Director of Global Studies and Competitive Fellowships, my Global Search for Justice course went on a life-changing journey to learn more about environmental justice.

The dense, biodiverse landscapes of Costa Rica, with rainforests stretching over mountains and light creeping through canopies, prove nature to be a profound presence that shapes everything living within it. This series of photographs explores the subtle ways humans have moved through this space with intentional care, from paths winding through forests to structures finding their place within the land. Together, these images reflect a relationship between people and the environment not defined by control, but rather, by coexistence.

The landscape of Monteverde is one of vast mountains and greenery.  It is a natural beauty that existed long before humankind.

Light trickles through the canopy of the Cloud Forest, illuminating the wilderness that lies below.

A faint scent of human presence wafts through the mountain views in the shape of a fence.

Nestled in the surrounding forest, the central building on the CIEE campus is woven into the natural world.

The path to the dormitory respects the livelihoods of living beings so they have the space to thrive.

The dry season in Monteverde does not mean that rain never falls. A rainbow over the community gardens is a testament to that.

A winding path follows the contours of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest.

Domestic animals, such as cows, are found in open fields, resting, grazing, and observing peacefully.

Basked in the golden rays of a sunset, a building is tucked away in the forest surrounding it.

A quiet spot overlooks Monteverde. It serves as a reminder: humans can enjoy nature without taking claim over it.

Even after the sun has set and humanity has gone to sleep, nature whispers its timeless presence on Earth.
