Special Edition Spring 2023: The End of the Semester Comes Again ...

And with it, a much-needed break for us all

By Lauren Trowbridge, Editor-in-Chief

Do it with me, friends. Let’s take a deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. We did it. Grades be damned, we’re at the end of another semester with full brains and filling cups of vitamin D. (Hello, sun, nice to see you again!) Welcome to another printed edition of The Wheel.

Now you may be wondering about the title of this edition. Good question. Dissent, Descendents and Dissonance. Three words that are usually used in very specific situations but all have a common thread. Dissent: “The expression or holding of opinions at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially held.” Descendents: “Descending from an ancestor.” Dissonance: “Lack of harmony among musical notes.” Unrest. Feeling off-kilter. Expectations.

Throughout this semester, this second semester of my junior year, I know I’ve felt off center more than once. More than twice. It’s been hard to keep my head screwed on straight and based on my conversations with my peers, I haven’t been alone in this. There have been moments of intense frustration, times of intense discomfort and feelings of expectations that are heavier than brick. These three words echo that and lead to the content of the paper itself.

The articles are separated into two sections: Space and Voice. We had our authors do with these prompts what they wanted. There are articles ranging from literal space, with Star Trek and philosophy, to using your voice for protest, with tips on local advocacy. Our authors add insight and guide us past our tangled up feelings about this semester and answer our question of, “What do we do about it?”

Dear reader, I hope you feel less alone with these articles in hand. Our journalists have worked tirelessly, and deserve the biggest thank you possible for adhering to deadlines, creating fantastic pieces of work on ranging topics and supplying great pictures to accompany them. I’d also like to thank our design intern, Naomi Yangathia, who’s gone above and beyond to design and format this edition. Thank you, wonderful Wheel staff. You’ve been fantastic.

On that note, it’s my pleasure to announce that Natalie Nemes, our Associate Editor, will be taking over the Editor-in-Chief position as I step down to pursue my major more intensely. (Shoutout to Interpreting! :) ) The Wheel is in capable hands, and I know she’ll do the news and the university justice. Thank you, Natalie, for all of your hard work. And thank you most of all, reader, for you are why we do it.

To take a leaf out of our columnist’s book,

Signing off,

Lauren Trowbridge, Editor-in-Chief
