Letter from the Editor

Welcome, readers, one and all, to a new year of student journalism! Whether you have been reading The Wheel’s digital editions for years or this is your first time hearing about us, we are thrilled to have you. Our campus newspaper is intended to be a space for you; a space to build community, to have your voices heard and to feel represented and cared for. You are at the center of our work; you are the very reason why we pester people for interviews and go out in the field searching for relevant stories. This year, to align with this mission, our goal is to adapt to the changing times so we can best prioritize you.
Last year, we witnessed a decline in engagement with our printed editions and the steady rise of technology as a new central hub for student voices. The digital age is upon us, and it is our job at The Wheel to ensure our resources and attention are being placed where our audience needs them most. With that being said, our decision this year was that the best way to engage our wide audience of students, faculty, staff and alumni is by fully venturing into our online communities. We want to expand our virtual presence so that any of our readers can access information and community from anywhere at any time.
Beyond maintaining our website presence, we plan to build our virtual community in a few key ways. First, our Instagram account, @stcatherinewheel, will be significantly expanding its presence. Our Associate Editor, Amirah Idris, has many plans for new, exciting, engaging content, so be sure to follow our Instagram to see all that she has in store. Second, in the upcoming months, we plan to create a Substack page. This page will host more informal information for our readers and updates about our website, so be sure to go there first for quick releases and engaging community content. Lastly, a podcast is in the works. Our goal is to upload our podcast to our Substack page and, potentially, to other online platforms. Stay tuned for all of these additions to The Wheel’s online community as we work to get these up and running.
The tides are shifting, the times are changing and, well… so are we. However, these changes are only to align with our unwavering priority of you. So, whether you are a Katie sports fan, avid lover of the art community, curious about what Katie’s are doing post-graduation or seeking out information on institutional changes, we at The Wheel are here to keep you informed and updated. We are here to share your voices and concerns with the larger community. We are here to bring people together, to share in the Katie experience. We are here, forever and always, for you.
