Introducing the First-Generation Student Union at St. Kate’s

By Faduma Ali

When Betlehem Gebrewolde started college at St. Catherine University as a Data Science and Marketing major, she often felt like she was figuring everything out on her own. As a first-generation student, she found herself struggling to navigate college life.

“I faced many challenges feeling like I didn’t belong, struggling to find resources and learning to manage my time while balancing responsibilities at home,” Gebrewolde said. “Those experiences inspired me to help start a community where students like me can feel seen, supported and connected.”

That idea led to the creation of the First-Generation Student Union (FGSU), a new club on campus focused on empowering and supporting students who are the first in their families to attend college. The club’s mission is to foster a welcoming community, offer resources for academic and personal growth, and celebrate the achievements and success of first-generation students at St. Kate’s.

The club began when Maggie Pearson, the new TRIO Success Coach, emailed students about starting a First-Generation Student Club and asked those interested to fill out a form. Gebrewolde said she didn’t hesitate. “I filled it out right away because I had already been thinking that St. Kate’s really needed a club like this,” she said.

While the FGSU primarily serves first-generation students, the club is open to anyone who wants to be part of a supportive and inclusive community. The group plans to offer workshops, events, and collaborations that connect students with helpful campus resources and opportunities to grow as leaders.

Now that the club is officially recognized, the team is planning its first event before the end of the semester. “We’re really excited for it,” Gebrewolde said. “Our goal is to create a space where everyone feels comfortable and supported in their college journey.”

For Gebrewolde, being a first-generation student is about resilience and pride. “To me, being a first-generation student means never giving up, even when things get tough,” she said. “It’s about finding strength in the struggles, believing in yourself and creating a new chapter of your life with courage and determination.”

Looking ahead, Gebrewolde hopes the First-Generation Student Union will continue to grow and become a key part of campus life. “I want the club to grow into a strong community that hosts meaningful and successful events, becoming a big part of St. Kate’s and a positive influence in students’ lives,” she said.

Her message to students is simple: “Please join the First-Generation Student Union! Let’s build a strong community together where we support, uplift and grow with one another.”
