Special Edition Spring 2024: Editor’s letter: Time, curious time

By Natalie Nemes

As the poet of a generation once said, “Time, curious time, gave me no compasses, gave me no signs.” While Ms. Swift wrote these lyrics for her love song “invisible string,” they might also resonate with us college students who are struggling to figure out what to do with ourselves. Sure, college is a time for discovering who you are — but the answer doesn’t come easily.

You might begin to understand yourself as an amalgamation of many genres, a kaleidoscope of different personalities, a spirit straddling several worlds and dimensions. And it becomes hard to chart a course for a life that encompasses all of who you are.

We are faced with the impossible decision of what to do with the rest of our time here on Earth. Time unspools in front of us — so much of it. And yet, the time we have in college is so short: My fellow graduating seniors know this all too well. As this final semester winds down and I count down the number of days until graduation, I’ve been wondering what it means to close this chapter in my life and begin the next.

As it turns out, other members of The Wheel staff have been pondering beginnings and endings and the passage of time, too. And so, it is with great excitement that we present to you this year’s theme: The Ticking Clock.

Our writers have tackled a wide range of topics that fall under this umbrella — ranging from aging and beauty to time management to the retirement of our president — and everything in between. As we grapple with time’s unwinding in this edition, we hope that these articles resonate with you and help you to explore your own relationship with the ever-ticking clock.

Of course, this incredible special edition wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the entire Wheel team. And for that, thanks are in order.

To all our writers: As always, thank you for being incredible. You are the heart and soul of student journalism at St. Kate’s and The Wheel is so lucky to have all of you.

To our business manager, Madeline Bjonskaas: Thanks for always being willing to crunch some numbers. You rock.

To our advisor, Andy Steiner: Your guidance and support throughout the semester has been invaluable. Thank you for everything that you do and for being an incredible mentor.

To my associate editor, Mia Timlin: Where can I even begin? I can’t imagine leading this team alone, and I am forever grateful for your support.

And last but not least, I would like to introduce the editorial staff for next year. It is with great pleasure that I would like to announce Mia and Ella Tracy, a talented writer who has worked with The Wheel in the past, as the new editor-in-chief and associate editor of The Wheel, respectively.

I’m sad to be leaving behind this amazing team that I have worked with for three years, but I am confident that I’m leaving it in good hands. I now pass the torch onto the next generation of editors. Have fun, and make it your own.

As always, dear reader, thank you for supporting The Wheel. Our work would mean nothing without your support. May you find peace amid the daunting landscape of never-ending time.
